Prosoem Guidelines
Notes for the Prosoem contributions
Prosoem
A Prosoem is a combination of the words prose and poem
that captures a person’s thoughts and views, preferably
in one or two pages. The format of a Prosoem is that each
line should preferably be a statement in itself, but also
linked meaningfully to the lines that come before and
after it.
The Brief
Your school, or organization, may make an award for students
who present a one Prosoem page. If so, the following guidelines
will help. - The document should have a minimum of
100 words, and a maximum of 500 words
- It should preferably fit on to one page.
- The subject should be about people and or places,
reflecting people and situations that the author has
observed.
- The form of expression can be a combination of prose
with poetic verse as required.
- If, however, the author wishes to focus on either
mode exclusively then that is acceptable.
Examples
Examples of the style to be used can be seen in the
writing of Jacques Prevert, and Charles Margerison.
Examples are provided on this site.
Your One Page
To make your presentation, choose a topic that is of
interest to you. It can be any subject that is of interest,
reflecting your observations and ideas on such topics
as
- a hobby
- your travels
- views on issues such as war, or famine
- sport
- a biography
- history
- a fictional story
- a person you have met
- a place
Any topic of your choice is acceptable.
Assessment
Each person will have the chance to read other participant’s
presentation. You will be able to vote for any of the
contributions, except your own. Your choice will be via
a closed ballot confidential assessment. Therefore, the
award winner will be chosen in a democratic way by those
participating. Personal Learning
Each person who participates is asked to write a separate
document on the topic:
‘What I learned about myself by participating
and writing the Prosoem.
This can be any length, and in any style. It can be
a sentence, a page or a few pages. It can be in the
style of a prosoem, or other style. The focus is on
what you personally learned about yourself in terms
of any points such as:
- your feelings about the contribution and how it compares
with other work.
- your thoughts on entering the competition
- points about what you learned about yourself as a
writer and yourself as a person.
Discussion
You may want to have persona l discussion with a staff
member, or friend, to share your learning, and to gain
feedback. This can be helpful to you in your learning.
Date for Presentation
To participate, please have your Prosoem presented before
the set date, and include your note on what you have
learned about yourself at the same time.
